History of Kesari

“Kesari stands for truth and justice. In an environment where untruth and injustice reign supreme, our mission is to uphold truth and justice. Ours is an attempt to clear the cobwebs of wrong perceptions and confusion and present real facts in proper light”, wrote Sri P. Parameswaran, sitting in the Sangh Karyalaya at Tali in Calicut. He was writing the maiden editorial for the first issue of the Kesari weekly to be brought out on Tuesday, November 27, 1951. To understand the purport of the editorial, one has to go back in time by a few months. 62 years of Kesari After the unconditional lifting of the ban unjustly imposed by the Central Government on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in 1949, as part of his whirlwind tour of the country, Param Poojaniya Shri Guruji had visited Calicut. In Calicut, the Sangh workers had enthusiastically arranged Shri Guruji’s interactive session with the prominent persons of the city from different walks of life. The press was also invited to the programme. The meeting was well attended and Shri Guruji could dispel all doubts lurking in the minds of those who had attended the meeting about the involvement of the Sangh in Gandhiji’s murder and convince them about Sangh’s innocence in the matter. He also lucidly explained to them on the ideology and the Sakha work of the Sangh. The programme was so impressive that the Sangh workers naturally expected good coverage by the media the next day. However, all their expectations were belied and there was no mention of the programme in any of the dailies; not even in a prominent Malayalam daily published from Calicut. The Sangh workers, led by Shri Shankar Shastry, a Sangh Pracharak from Nagpur, working in Calicut at the time, called on the editor of the Malayalam daily the same day to enquire about the matter. “I know your programme was not only impressive but also was very effective. But I am sorry, because of our policy, we could not cover the news in our daily.” This was how the editor reacted. “No use in cursing the darkness. The ideal thing to do is to light a lamp to dispel darkness,” thought Shankar Shastry. And thus Kesari was born. Without losing time, he started collecting money from his acquaintances and Sangh sympathizers and initially he could collect Rupees 13/-, which formed the ‘capital’ of the proposed weekly.

During this period, Sri M.Raghavan, retired military personnel, was working as the Kerala correspondent of Hindustan Samachar. Shankar Shastry, who was acquainted with the sterling qualities of Raghavan, entrusted the work of Kesari to him, and Raghavan, true to his nature, took up the responsibility in all earnest as his only life- mission and by the time he retired in Oct.1998, through his unswerving dedication, unstinted enthusiasm and tireless efforts as the manager, developed Kesari into a mighty and sturdy institution.

K.P.Gopalakrishnan Nair of Calicut was the first official Chief Editor of Kesari. P.Parameswaran, of course, was there in his unofficial capacity in the editorial wing as all-in-all. R.Venugopal, who succeeded him continued till Sadhusheelan Parameswaran Pillai, who later on took Sansyasa under the name Swami Parameswarananda, took over as the Chief Editor. R. Venugopal was the Printer and Publisher till he was given responsibility in the BMS and shifted to Delhi. He also used to write columns. After Sadhusheelan, Sri M.A. Krishnan took over as the Chief Editor. M.A.Krishnan, through his efforts, could bring literary giants like Kuttikrishna Marar, V.M.Korath, etc., novelists like P.C.Kuttikrishnan, Poets like N.N.Kakkad, etc., nearer to Kesari. After his retirement, Sri T.R.Somasekharan, a scholarly Sangh Pracharak, held the fort for some time and then it was the turn of P. Gopalankutty Master- former Kerala Prant Karyavah- and R.Sanjayan, a Pracharak. Later, the mantle of the chief editor was donned by Sri J.Nandakumar who is presently the National Co-ordinator of Prajna Pravah. The tenure of each of them proved to be a turning point in the history of the weekly. Presently, Dr. N R Madhu, is the Chief Editor.  Sri P.K.Sukumaran, who joined the editorial wing as editor, after graduation in 1968, and retired in 2002, also had played a pivotal role in grooming Kesari to the present state through the contributions made by him in the editorial section. Also, during the Emergency, Sukumaran was literally the de facto chief editor of Kesari.

Although the Kesari weekly came into being in 1951, the Press Act was brought into force in 1957 only and, along with all other newspapers and periodicals, Kesari also got its registration under the Press Act. In 1962, a Trust under the name and style Hindustan Prakasan Trust was formed with P.K. Manavikraman Raja, P.Parameswaran and R.Venugopal as trustees, with an object to “advance the progress of the country in all possible ways, in consonance with the Dharma, Ideals, Culture and Tradition of Bharata Varsha, Primarily by the publication of books, Pamphlets, dailies, weeklies, periodicals in Malayalam, English, Hindi, Tamil and Sanskrit”.

Consideration of the written request made by R.Venugopal, in 1970, the Hindustan Prakasan Trust took over the ownership of the Kesari Weekly on June 1, 1970. And M.Ragavan Also the Trustee board was enlarged by Co-opting U.Dattatreya Rao, Adv. K.V. Gopalan Adiyodi and Adv.T.V.Ananthan as Trustees, taking the number of trustees to six.

M.Raghavan, who was managing the publication of Kesari ever since its inception, became the manager of the Trust.

In June 1975, Smt. Indira Gandhi clamped Internal Emergency and suspended the democratic rights of the Indian people. Kesari also had to bear the brunt. For almost three months publication had to be suspended because of the highhanded measures taken by the district administration by way of imposing censorship. However, Kesari could enlist the co-operation and support of the media fraternity and force the government to revoke the censorship.

It was during the Emergency, in 1976, Kesari weekly celebrated its Silver Jubilee. It was a great event that proved to be a milestone in the history of the weekly. In 2002, Kesari celebrated its Golden Jubilee in a befitting manner. By that time, Kesari, which was working at a rented premise at Palayam Road, could shift its office to its own premises, “SWASTHIDISHA,” at Chalappuram. The editorial and DTP sections, working at small premises owned by the trust at Tali, could also be brought under the same roof. The 60th Year was also celebrated with two days programme, held at Calicut, with seminars, discussions, etc. All these Celebrations were an all-round success.

In the Politico-Socio-Cultural field of Kerala, Kesari could effectively play a prominent role. During the agitation against the formation of the Muslim majority Malappuram District, Angadipuram Tali Temple agitation, Nilakkal Mahadeva Temple agitation, etc., Kesari could play a seminal role in cultivating peoples opinion in favour of these agitations. Probably, it was Kesari weekly that first brought to public notice the lurking danger of religious fundamentalism and extremism taking deep roots in Kerala.

Presently, the people of Kerala state are lamenting over the imminent death of the River Nila. But way back in the 1970s, Kesari had brought out a special issue during Onam festival highlighting the importance of the river and the danger it faced because of its senseless exploitation because of human greed. Even now, Kesari has been active in educating the people of the state on various issues concerning them. Every year, the annual number brought out during the Onam festival is the most sought after publication in Kerala.

Balagokulam is the biggest children’s movement in Kerala today. Kesari, which started a column for children under the caption “Balagokulam” way back in the 1950s, had played an important role in the formation of Balagokulam. Tapasya, an art and literary forum, also owes its birth to Kesari.

In 2005, Kesari instituted two awards for journalists:

1. Rashtra Seva Puraskaram- to a senior journalist for lifetime achievement.

2. Raghaveeyam Puraskaram- to a novice in the print/visual media.

It was in the 1970s, the Swayamsevaks all over Kerala started enlisting subscribers for Kesari in a systematic way. Ever since, in November every year, Swayamsevaks are engaging themselves in the subscription drive, and during the 60th year of the weekly, they could achieve the target of enlisting 60000 subscribers. During the subscription drive in November 2012, the number of subscribers has risen to almost 70000, the maximum in the history of Kesari.

Kesari has digitised all its issues, right from the first issue to the last issue of December 2010, and the CDs are available in the market for RS. 1500/-.

Kesari’s new office at Chalappuram was inaugurated by Param Poojaneeya Sarsanghachalak Dr. Mohanji Bhagwat on December 2020. The Kesari Bhavan comprises Mahatma Gandhi College of Mass Communication, a center for media research, with a state – of – the – art digital library ,conference hall and many more facilities.
